Introvert or Extrovert........How do you balance?

Posted on

A perfect memento from my mother's wedding,
a lovely bowl of floating flowers, on my desk at home.

We celebrated a monumental weekend,
and the opening of a new chapter in our family life,
at the wedding of my mother and her new husband, Hal.

It was beyond.....

romantic, beautiful and life changing.

I think you will understand if I take some time on posting photos.
I'm still savoring the moments, and absorbing these changes in life.
I look forward to sharing more beauty in upcoming posts.

Today, after all the preparation, excitement, support, travel
and catching up with dear family, old friends, and getting to know wonderful new family.....
I loved it.....every moment and now.....

I'm wiped out.
I fold.
(I'm working Tuesday-Friday this week so I'm happy to be home today).

As I watched my mother, looking fresh and beautiful at the post wedding brunch yesterday, I continue to marvel at her energy level. She is amazing. She always has had more energy than me and I'm 30 years younger. I started drinking coffee years ago just to keep up with her.

Do you ever do that?
Push..push...push...
and then crash?

As a School Psychologist I'm always fascinated with personality inventories and studies describing how and why we function as we do.
While working on Master's Degree in Educational/Developmental Psychology, back in the mid 1980's,
I wrote a paper entitled, 'Theory of Equilibrium',
which was essentially about the importance of seeking balance.

Questions I ask myself:
How can I be the life of the party one day and drained to the point of not getting off the couch the next?  How can I be nervous about leading the procession down the aisle at my Mom's wedding when I write a blog and expose all matter of things-yet I'm uncomfortable being seen?  How can I lead politically challenging meetings but pray not be called upon to respond  in a group of people I know?
Does any of this ring a bell?

Much of this irony is about the introversion/extroversion balance.
Some of us are actually introverts functioning as extroverts which is why we are
exhausted after a 'big' weekend rather than energized. Don't get me wrong-I love the big wonderful weekends it's about finding the balance.

This quote resonates with me:
You alternate between phases of work and solitude, and periods of social activity."Introverts can move around their introverted “set point” which determines how they need to balance solitude with social activity. But when they move too much -- possibly by over-exerting themselves with too much socializing and busyness -- they get stressed and need to come back to themselves, according Olsen Laney. This may manifest as going through periods of heightened social activity, and then balancing it out with a period of inwardness and solitude.
"There's a recovery point that seems to be correlated with how much interaction you've done," says Dembling. "We all have our own private cycles."

A couple of weekends ago, in the wine country I had a conversation with two of my best friends, also School Psychologists, who also feel they are more introverted than extroverted here.
In a way it's a surprise from these warm, fun loving women and yet,
I'm pretty sure there may be a personality and profession trend here with us.

The next day, while meeting fellow blogger Adrienne, from The Rich Life on a Budget here, we also
discussed feeling more introverted than extroverted, yet we share so much of ourselves on our blogs.
Bloggers, isn't that interesting?
You notice we aren't all getting together over coffee every morning or popping in unannounced right?
Fascinating stuff......

Where do you fall on the Introversion/Extroversion scale?

And just in case you think I'm going all cerebral on you-
I still have that shoe/bag addiction.

Mom's wedding shoes and my DVF kicks held up very well!

My lovely blogging friend, Leslie from Around the Table, has a fun giveaway of these gorgeous glassybabycandles here. You will love her blog!

How are you feeling today? I would love to hear where you fall on the personality scale and how you find your balance.

Happy Monday!
