Tips on Transitioning the Closet for Fall

Posted on

Putting away the colorful summer wear for the season

When I feel overwhelmed with the whirlwind of life I tend to say
'I feel like I've been shot out of a cannon'.
Whooooosh!
I don't know why but the visual resonates with me....
or maybe it's just the whoooosh.

The last seven weeks have been a whirlwind of grand proportions for me.
If you've been following along on the blog you'll know what I mean.
Suffice it to say, a weekend at home, with no agenda, was exactly what we were needing last weekend.

Packing up summer sandals

With cooler temps flirting their way into our daily life I was feeling the need to switch out my closet for fall.
Clearing clutter and organizing things has always been the perfect combo of
de-stressing and accomplishment for me.

I have a good sized walk in closet that I share with my husband but I store
my off season pieces in the guest room closet and in under bed storage.
I like to keep it organized and not too crammed that way.

When switching out my seasonal wardrobe,  I edit my closet pretty seriously.
I play my 4 D's game from my previous post
here.

My best tip is to have a permanent 'donations' bag in the closet with a large plastic bag liner and a
tally sheet for taxes (with pen). It's a permanent reminder to let things go that are no longer working for me.
It's much easier if the system is already set up-then you don't have to fuss with it
three times to make it happen.

At this stage in life I'm committed to keeping only things I feel good in-even if it was a great deal,
or on-trend-if it didn't work-it's a goner.

Clearing the Clutter.....

It's fun to open the boxes of sweaters and cozy in anticipation of chilly weather.
I often find sweaters that I didn't remember having-so it's a bit like Christmas!

I recently found these hangers for scarves and they work well as a visual reminder
of the accent pieces I have.
I made one for fancy and one for everyday wear.

This is a new closet organizer I recently purchased. I've been collecting watches for a number of years.
I finally broke down and bought this case to organize and keep my collection clean.

I'm still having a slight crush on this Marc Jacobs in rose-gold,
a birthday gift from my husband, Scott,  last summer.
It's been a fun twist of color for me and it goes with just about everything I own.

This is how I transition my closet for fall. Do you have any tips?
I also examine my seasonal wardrobe by color story, for filling in gaps,
and I plan to do a post on that in the near future.

Do you ever feel like you've been 'shot out of a cannon'?
Do you chill out by organizing stuff like I do?
